Front cover features Sunbeam, a homeless boy housed at the Beulah Home for boys in Boyne City, Michigan
In 1904 Herman Swift turned a former hotel into a home for unfortunate boys who had been orphaned or dropped off at the home because their families were too large and needed a place for their boys to live. Swift was initially hailed as a local hero, but by 1909 the Beulah Home began to have troubles. First, complaints mounted from locals about some of the boys being delinquents and causing problems in town. Then, several boys claimed Swift had been molesting them. Swift was subsequently arrested for child abuse. The case against hm continued through 1913 and Swift passed away the following year.
